The "Surprise Bag" Strategy
Before you set out, pack a dedicated "surprise bag" of activities, special snacks, and drinks that nobody else knows about. Whether you're traveling with kids who need a distraction, or friends and partners who need a little pick-me-up, pulling out a brand-new game, a fresh deck of cards, or a favorite treat a few hours into the drive completely resets the mood and keeps the cabin happy.
Resist the "Push Through" Temptation (and Stretch!)
When you are a few hours into a long driving day, it is incredibly easy to think, "If we just keep going, we can shave an hour off our arrival time." Resist that urge. Forcing yourself to push through leads to fatigue and stiff muscles. Instead, schedule regular breaks to get out of the car, stretch your legs, and get some fresh air. Most importantly, enforce a simple rule: everyone takes a bathroom break, whether they think they need to or not. It saves you from the inevitable "I have to go" ten minutes after you just merged back onto the highway!
Leave Room for the "Little Treasures"
The most memorable road trip stops are rarely the ones you planned from home. When you are driving along a scenic coastline or through historic towns, leave a generous buffer in your itinerary for spontaneous detours. Pull over at a quiet, rugged beach to comb the shoreline for sea glass, wander down a promising dirt road just to see where it leads, or stop at a local farm stand. Giving yourself permission to pause for the small, quiet wonders turns a simple drive into a true adventure.
Build a Collaborative Playlist
Music is the ultimate mood-booster on a long drive, but arguing over the radio is not. A week before you leave, create a shared, collaborative playlist and have everyone traveling, kids, teens, friends, or partners, add their favorite songs. Hearing everyone's unique tastes mix together keeps the energy high, avoids "DJ battles" in the front seat, and leaves you with a beautiful musical time capsule of your trip long after you return. Our California playlist was one of my favourite yet!
